A Sad Farewell

On Thursday evening, 23 May, Bishop Kozon celebrated a Thanksgiving Mass with the sisters and parishioners in Mariukirkjan for the 93 years of mission lived by 58 Franciscan Missionaries of Mary on the Faroe Islands. Four visiting sisters from Rome and Paris also attended this special occasion.

The liturgy was accompanied by beautiful music on violin, cello, flute and guitar. Prayers were offered for the needs of the parish, the sisters, and the Faroese people. At the end of Mass, the five sisters of the Tórshavn community formally received their mission sending from Sr. Lætitia, regional superior, to Belgium, Korea, Ireland and France respectively. After Mass, there was a reception in the parish hall, which had been generously prepared by parishioners.

Despite the shortage of petrol due to the worker´s strike, and despite the sadness of the occasion, the evening was marked by a large turnout and a spirit of thanksgiving and joy.

The first two sisters will leave the islands for good on 12 June, to be followed by the others in July. May God go with them, bless them and guide them in their new missions, and may He guide and bless our parish so that it may blossom and grow in its new mission.
