Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (14 February). Mass will take place in Mariukirkjan at 7.30 p.m. and will include the distribution of blessed ashes.
The ashes we receive on Ash Wednesday are a call to repentance, reminding us that we are dust and to dust we shall return, and that our lives should be marked by self-denial and generosity.
During Lent, we are asked to spend time in prayer, fasting and good works. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting for everyone between the ages of 14 and 60. We are also asked to abstain from meat every Friday during Lent.
Through prayer, fasting and good works, our aim is always to allow God to purify us and bring about an inner conversion in our hearts and draw us closer to him.
It is also highly recommended that we receive the Sacrament of Penance during Lent.
The Way of the Cross will take place in Mariukirkjan on Friday evening at 7.30.pm.
