Meet Our New Parish Priest!

Monsignor Peter Fleetwood arrived safely on the Faroes via Denmark on Thursday, 1 October. He will stay with us until 19 October, and return again on 1 December for another four weeks.

Fr. Peter first visited the Faroes for two weeks in July, 2018. He is 66 years of age, the eldest of three siblings and originally from Liverpool, UK. He studied for the priesthood at the English College, Rome. Following his ordination, he spent 35 years teaching philosophy in both Rome and the UK, his interests ranging from atheism to political philosophy and metaphysics. He has also served as a pastor in four parishes, as chaplain to a large Catholic secondary school and as chaplain to a large hospital in Liverpool. In addition to that, he spent over seven years on the Council for Culture in Rome and four years at the office of the Council of the European Bishops´ Conference in Switzerland so it is safe to say that he brings a wealth of experience with him.

His first Sunday Mass was celebrated with parishioners in Mariukirkjan on Sunday, 4 October, when we celebrated the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, so dear to our parish. He speaks several languages fluently and already reads Danish almost perfectly. He now looks forward to learning Faroese and getting to know his parishioners.

We wish Fr. Peter a heartfelt welcome and hope he will be very happy with us here on the Faroes.
