Lent 2019

Lent, this holy and grace-filled time in the Church Year, is a time for penitential prayer, self-examination and repentance. It’s a time of building our house on the solid rock of the suffering Christ, where no flood and storm kan destroy, a time, which prepares us to meet the resurrected Christ. He is the only one, who fully satisfies our heart’s deepest longing.

It is a good and holy practice to humble ourselves by abstaining from other than mere food for the body. The eye should abstain from all vain and curious sights, the ears from listening to idle talk, the tongue from detraction and frivolous words. True sorrow for past sins can best be expressed through acts of love and charity toward others (St.Joseph Weekday Missal p.429).

With these few further thoughts on this holy season of Lent I wish all of you a continued blessed and holy Lent.

Lenten Rules

Ash Wednesday the 6th of March and Good Friday the 19th of April, which begin and end Lent, are both abstinence and days of fast in remembrance of our Lord’s own fast, suffering and death. These two days are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence, i.e. on these days one must fast and refrain from eating meat.

To fast means to eat at most one full, simple meal a day and let the other meals be a minimum if not to leave them out all together.

Lent ought to be a time, where one seriously does everything in one’s power to develop a real life of faith, and to practice with greater effort acts of charity. One ought as far as possible to avoid parties and exaggerated pleasure, since the time of Lent is a very serious time. It is completely alright if Lent has a character of austerity, precisely because we wish to gather ourselves around the suffering Jesus. So much the more as we could experience the great joy of Easter and our life of faith would take on a deeper content. It is important that we take Lent seriously and not lose spiritual eagerness. It is necessary to rediscover the spiritual purpose of Lent.

Who is obligated?

Persons from the age of 14 and upwards are obligated to observe Fridays as a day of penance and to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who have reached their 18th year are obliged to fast until the age of 60. Parents are encouraged to speak with their children and youngsters about the purpose of keeping the rules of the Church in this area and to emphasize the days of penance and fasting in the family. Good Friday Collection

A collection for the Holy Land is taken up in all Catholic Churches on Good Friday. The purpose of the collection is to provide financial means for the preservation and maintenance of the holy places in Palestine, where the salvation of the human race took place in time. The holy places are extremely important for our faith in Jesus Christ, the one sent by God to the world. Or as Ignaca Card.Moussa Daoud, Prefect emeritus for the Congregation for the Oriental Churches wrote in his letter in 2005 to the world’s bishops, “it (collection) aims to promote among the Christian faithful a love for the Land of the Lord. For the Church to survive there it must rely upon a loving and nurturing solidarity on the part of each Christian; a solidarity which bears witness to faith in him who was born in that Land, who preached the Gospel there and who also died and was resurrected there.”

Let us be generous in supporting this work of the Church.

Remember: the giving of alms is one of the three main exercises of penance. Supporting the Church’s efforts in the Holy Land and the Bishops’ Lenten Caritas compaign is a good lenten act of penance. For those, who cannot be present at the Good Friday liturgy, you are encouraged to send your contribution to the Chancery Office’s giro account: 500-1471 mærket “Det hellige Land.
